about

Important!!!! Get yer cans out!!! This Must Be The Place is a binaural recording, and for the best listening experience should really only be listened to on headphones.

This Must Be The Place: A sonic time-machine. A portal to musical moment, in the very place it happened.

Binaural recordings (when experienced on headphones), give a 360° audio image, rather than the simple left and right of a stereo recording; on listening we are enveloped in 3 Dimensional sound.

There’s a real sense of the space the songs were written and played in, and of the moment in time that the recordings were captured. A unique, immersive listening experience.

Recorded across two days in Grassington, this Must Be The Place explores the ways in which people’s memories, the events in our lives, and the experiences we have are embedded in the very walls and streets of a place, rooted in its very soil. The place in your hometown that when you’re there, you’re the most "home" that you can be? The place that most speaks to you, that draws you back when you’re away, that centres you, the place where that thing happened?

Throughout May and early June 2018 Hope & Social met and spoke with a number of people from Grassington, and visited the places they felt were significant in the fabric of their lives, in this place. From these conversations and field-trips the band have written and recorded six songs that can be listened to in the six unique locations where the pieces were recorded.

The recordings contained herein were only ever meant to be heard (via a pair of tin-cans and some string - see album cover) in the exact places they were recorded, as an antidote to the ubiquity of the internetz-available mp3. We're releasing this EP now, during the enforced period of social-distancing and self-isolation due to the Coronavirus pandemic because there doesn't seem to be a better time to give you the chance to virtually travel to this beautiful village in the Yorkshire Dales. So, take a seat (in your garden, or somewhere where you can feel the heat of the sun stream in through your windows), pop your headphones on, close your eyes and let yourself be transported to the greenery of North Yorkshire. Smell the grass. Listen to the birds... oh and keep your ears out for that Spitfire!

about

Hope and Social Leeds

In the tradition of the travelling bands, we guess we’re a bit like a Yorkshire E-Street Band...meets Arcade Fire...meets The Faces…meets Dexys Midnight Runners…meets Prefab Sprout…at a party...in an argument about who gets to have sex with David Bowie. We're not as good at describing ourselves as others are, so...

Track Name: Bench
Now the clouds are thinning out
Now the green pokes through
I can see the daffodils
There in their bloom

Now the mist is breaking up
Now the sun cuts through
I can see the houses form
There in the blue

I'm just a spec, a piece of dust
Floating round the universe.
But so are you, and so are they
But right here now well that's okay

Every moments lights will change
Strangers passing through
This place, this belongs to me
A dot in the blue

I'm just a spec, a piece of dust
Floating round the universe.
But so are you, and so are they
But right here now well that's okay

The swallows dance up in the sky
The cows march on the countryside
The trees are swaying, beating time
It's not some proof, it's not a sign

It's just the cards, the way it plays
Some things will grow, some things decay
And we will live, and we will die
But right here now well that's alright

The swallows dance up in the sky
The cows march on the countryside
The trees are swaying, beating time
It's not some proof, it's not a sign

It's just the cards, the way it plays
Some things will grow, some things decay
And we will live, and we will die
But right here now well that's alright

I'm just a spec, a piece of dust
Floating round the universe.
Track Name: Bridge
Here’s where we played baby
Here’s where we fell down
Here’s where we bled honey
Into the ground
Here’s where we loved baby
Here’s where we made out
Here’s where we cried honey
Tears in the ground

All our ghosts
Are laid in the ground

Over the bridge riding
Down through the way down
Oh with our sweat dripping
Into the ground
Holding your hand honey
Keeping our eyes down
Oh with our hearts pouring
Into the ground

All our ghosts
Are laid in the ground

(This is the place, this is the song
These are the words and here's where it happened)

Here’s where we grew slowly
Straight out of thin air
Here’s where we bred gently
Out of the ground
Watching the days rolling
Watching the years fly
Watching us grow slowly
Into the ground

All our ghosts
Are laid in the ground

Now that my legs fail me
Now that I shuffle down
Here’s where I think baby
Face to the ground
Here’s where we’ll stay honey
Here’s where we’ll lay down
Here’s where I’ll sink finally
Into the ground

With all our ghosts
There in the ground

(This is the place, this is the song
These are the words and here's where it happened)
Track Name: Church
Hands up the ones who married
Hands up the ones who tied
Hands up the silent lovers
Who let their secrets hide
Inside the hymn book pages
Under the wooden pews
Tell us what you discovered
As you were passing through

Hands up the ones who suffered
Hands up the ones who died
Hands up the silent mourners
With hearts all wrung our dry
You've been to awful places
Done things we all must do
Tell us what you discovered
As you were passing through

What do you know about love?

Hand up the ones who prayed here
Hands up the ones who tried
To find some deeper meaning
To those unsilent nights
There's no ferocious battle
There is no finish line
Tell us what you found there
To help us through the night

What do you know about love?

We're going to come together
We're going to carve our names
We're going to brave the weather
Come find me here I am
We're going to sing together
Do things we all must do
We'll share what we discover
As we are passing through

What do you know about love?
Track Name: Market
I’ve been sitting here blowing out the same old tune
It rattles me. I could sing this all day through now
I’m just sitting here on this road

I’m just taking time watching how our loved ones grow
Like colours change as the clouds blow to and fro now
I’m just sitting here on this road

He’ll be a man who grows
She’ll need a loving soul
And I’ll be...sitting here on this road

There’s no need to move, here’s the library pick and choose
It’s all to see, swimming in a sea of lives lived
I’m just sitting here on this road

There’s a face who could had been the sunshine in your life
There’s one who could have ended crying by your side now
I’m just sitting here on this road

He’ll fall and carry on
She’ll fail but still be strong
And I’ll be sitting here on this road

Come back and let us know
How much your world has grown
And I’ll be sitting here asking
Maybe I should have moved
Flown out and seen the world
But I’ve been happy just on this road
