We are the storymen We come to entertain And make you dream We pour our words like wine We mould our myths in minds Like plasticine We are the storymen We come to entertain And make you see We tell our tales in rhyme We weave ours words in time It’s make believe We won’t let the truth get in the way We’ll redefine the storyline To make the truth say what we want to say We’ll redefine the storyline Ten years of mouth to hand Ten years in an indie band It takes its toll I’m a soldier, I’ve got soul But my memory’s full of holes Nevermind...I’m sure we’ll find... The one where Edward set himself on fire Story 5 the fireside The one where James just went a lost his mind Story 9 the legal high (These days it seems) Come on tell me how it seems (These days we know) Come on tell me what you know) (These days it seems) Please tell me what it seems (We’re short of dreams) So we’re going to make our own Come on and join the fray Emphasise the role you’ve played It’s quite alright to make the truth come alive With a liberal dash of lies The story’s king so let’s begin The one where Ed was caught out on the train Story 4 the toilet door The one where we all finally felt our age 28 our dancing days are done (These days it seems) Come on tell me how it seems (These days we know) Come on tell me what you know) (These days it seems) Please tell me what it seems (We’re short of dreams) So we’re going to make our own 44 a leprechaun Story 2 Gary painted blue 33 a hoovered bed 38 “I think Ed’s dead” Story number 59 A travelodge on the old M5 A wrong room and written off car A superhuman van alarm 17 Gary sleeping rough I’m on the moors in a taxi lost Number 12 the morning post For Mr Goff and his sleepy host 88 a shower with James I think it’s best if we mention no names Story 10 a girl called Jen Stop stop no names again (These days it seems) Come on tell me how it seems (These days we know) Come on tell me what you know) (These days it seems) Please tell me what it seems (We’re short of dreams) So we’re going to make our own

25 and I got to say We’re flying and we just can’t fail The way it’s going well we can’t go wrong Every sneeze there’s another song This is it, the golden prize 20 minutes and a chance to thrive Sit tight enjoy the ride We’ll be signing on the dotted line tonight Even though it gets in the way Even though you don’t like the taste Hear me out Hear me out Ok so not tonight Trundle home for an early rise A sales job won’t sell itself A job seeker needs to seek his rent again (Help me out) Well I’m sorry but I can’t commit (Help me out) There’s a schedule and I’ve got to stick to it I know you need me now But there’s a show in another town Even though it gets in the way Even though you don’t like the taste Hear me out Hear me out Even though it gets in the way You and me We’re going to be You and me We’re going to be Just you and me

On the coastline of Britain Where history was written We’re here in a hut by the sea We’re all celebrating The marriage of Jason And the fact that we’re young and we’re free With a drinking vocation And a mindless elation We’re whipping a storm from the sea The floorboards are jumping The Fondas are pumping We’re as happy as ever we’ll be And I know now that that party was the greatest night of our lives And I know now that it ruined us for some other parties that night William went swimming in a suit and a stetson He’s drinking a gin in the waves Jimmy played Stradlin while the room was unravelling The conga just spiralled away So pass my white russian For a straight shot of calcium We’re not going to eat for a week (and a day) We’re singing our hearts out To a band who will no doubt Sell many more records than me And I know now that that party was the greatest night of our lives And I know now that it ruined us for those other parties that might Have wooed us and seduced us into washing those memories away But I left well my heart there on that night in a hut by the bay And after all when it’s said and it’s done At the start of the day and the setting of the setting sun Well we drank our share and we hugged and despaired And we laughed and we laughed and we sucked in the air And we were serious, ridiculous, outrageous and kind and squinting in the sunshine we laughed and we laughed and we sucked in the air and we sucked in the air And we’re drinking and we’re dancing and we’re having the time of our lives And we’re rolling and we’re raging On a night that could end all the nights And we woke up on an old bench when you should have been home with your wife… And we slept there, together, when you should have been home with your wife…

I’ve been sitting here Blowing out the same old tune It rattles me I could sing this all day through now I’m just sitting here on this road I’m just taking time watching how our loved ones grow Like colours change As the clouds blow to and fro now I’m just sitting here on this road He’ll be a man who grows She’ll need a loving soul And I’ll be...sitting here on this road There’s no need to move Here’s the library pick and choose It’s all to see Swimming in a sea of lives lived I’m just sitting here on this road There’s a face who could had been the sunshine in your life There’s one who could have ended crying by your side now I’m just sitting here on this road He’ll fall and carry on She’ll fail but still be strong And I’ll be sitting here on this road Come back and let us know How much your world has grown And I’ll be sitting here asking Maybe I should have moved Flown out and seen the world But I’ve been happy just on this road

Here’s where we played baby Here’s where we fell down Here’s where we bled honey Into the ground Here’s where we loved baby Here’s where we made out Here’s where we cried honey Tears in the ground All our ghosts Are laid in the ground Over the bridge riding Down through the way down Oh with our sweat dripping Into the ground Holding your hand honey Oh with our eyes down Oh with our hearts pouring Into the ground All our ghosts Are laid in the ground Here’s where we grew slowly Straight out of thin air Here’s where we bred gently Out of the ground Watching the days rolling Watching the years fly Watching us grow slowly Into the ground All our ghosts Are laid in the ground Now that my legs fail me Now that I shuffle down Here’s where I think baby Face to the ground Here’s where we’ll stay honey Here’s where we’ll lay down Here’s where I’ll sink finally Into the ground With all our ghosts There in the ground

We went down to Camden Town to buy a bag of beans We'd been told that that is where the magic will begin We went down to Camden Town to find our magic key I'd been told that that is where my fortune marries me Down where the feeding frenzy goes Armed with love and naive charm and dressed by M&S Awkwardly, begrudgingly we're followed by the press Egged on by a baying crowd, a clutch of minor stars Son you'll get to number one if you just listen hard Down where the feeding frenzy goes Down where we come to sell our souls Nobody can play this guitar Quite the way I think we used to I know we weren't what you were looking for And you know I just can't blame you Let's go down to Camden Town and plant our bag of beans I think it's time to bury ghosts let our ambitions be We went there a thousand times Played our songs and sang our lines Again, again, again, why I don't know Nobody can play this guitar Quite the way I think we used to I know we weren't what you were looking for And you know I just can't blame you

Runaway Untie the knots that keep you here today Undo the ropes that stop you flying away Take off your shoes and put your head on straight Jesus Saves Maybe for some but us it’s far too late The last thing we need right now is any more weight The last thing we right now is someone’s blame You save yourself and no one else Runaway Go out the way you came in And go As far as you can away from Scott Hall Road Pills and pain Living together just like Fan and flame You took a bed at Jimmy’s that’s ok I won’t be there to greet you anyway These flats and roads will crush our bones Runaway Go out the way you came in Away Lace up your boots and come on And go As far as you can away from Scott Hall Road

Hands up the ones who married Hands up the ones who tied Hands up the silent lovers Who let their secrets hide Inside the hymn book pages Under the wooden pews Tell us what you discovered As you were passing through Hands up the ones who suffered Hands up the ones who died Hands up the silent mourners With hearts all wrung our dry You've been to awful places Done things we all must do Tell us what you discovered As you were passing through What do you know about love? Hand up the ones who prayed here Hands up the ones who tried To find some deeper meaning To those unsilent nights There's no ferocious battle There is no finish line Tell us what you found there To help us through the night What do you know about love? We're going to come together We're going to carve our names We're going to brave the weather Come find me here I am We're going to sing together Do things we all must do We'll share what we discover As we are passing through What do you know about love?

I’d do it all again Of that I can’t pretend, no Even though we know how it will end We fluttered in the storm We raged against it all…not all Even though we knew how it must end Even those these days We don’t wake up in a haze I miss the shots in public houses now We promised not to fade But we didn’t understand the deal with… Age and home and love and tiny feet. Even those these days We don’t wake up in a haze I miss the shots in public houses Happy Bread and cruel hangovers Right up to the end We were smothered there in friends Living nights in people’s houses Happy Bread and cruel hangovers Drinking through til Sunday morning Monday pissed and friends all warning... “Do not waste a golden talent Do not feed a growing habit” We laughed a lifetime Cried ourselves dry I would not change a single moment.. Let’s do it all again
10.
The Party must end What do we do then? I’ll go back to pushing pens And you go back to losing friends The bar has run dry We’ve cried all we’ll cry I miss the rage, I miss the fun I do not envy anyone who’s always been dry Last to leave put the keys back through the door Leave a note tell them we’re not there anymore The party must end The bruises will mend I’ll keep the ringing in my ears A memory of the golden years Years in the sun The luckiest ones We’ll take a bow Turn our backs File away the photographs In a draw full of fun Last to leave put the keys back through the door Leave a note tell them we’re not there anymore

about

“Happy Bread (and Cruel Hangovers)” is all about stories. We love stories. We love telling them and we love hearing them. This album is a celebration of the stories that we’ve told over and over in bars and late night kitchens and the stories that we’ve heard back in return. The gentle legends that we’ve woven from the vaguely ridiculous realities of our drunken and joyful adventures. All of us all dressed up in blue trying to seize the moment and somehow missing and grabbing something else that might even be better. Or funnier. Or at the very least makes for a better story with the benefit of a little bit of time and a little bit of love….

about

Hope and Social Leeds

In the tradition of the travelling bands, we guess we’re a bit like a Yorkshire E-Street Band...meets Arcade Fire...meets The Faces…meets Dexys Midnight Runners…meets Prefab Sprout…at a party...in an argument about who gets to have sex with David Bowie. We're not as good at describing ourselves as others are, so...
